(This narrative is written "sketchy" on purpose. Help fill in some of the spaces, if you can.)
In the late 1940's Mr. and Mrs. Warren Nardelle, Sr. and family moved to Metaire. Since his son, Warren Jr, was in the Cub Scout program in New Orleans, Mr. Nardelle wanted to maintain his involvement. Finding no troop near their home and neighborhood, Troop 45 was founded (on insert date here) and chartered to "a group of citizens" at Ella Dolhonde School on Severn Ave in Metairie.
The troop grew quickly and, in the late fifties through the early sixties, it was not uncommon for there to be 50-60 kids registered in the troop.
We were know as an "Eagle factory" because we turned out so many Eagle Scouts back then, but with such a large enrollment, it was a natural occurance. We also retained a large number of "older" boys. The make up of the troop may have been: six patrols of eight scouts, two "senior" patrols (of scouts over 14), a group of 8-10 JASM's (16-18 yr old), and a group of ASM's and dads. The Senior Patrol Leader and the Scirbe were the two most important guys. The SPL for leadership and the Scribe just to keep track of us all!
We would meet on Wednesday night from 7:00 to 9:00pm. In addtion, there would be a weekly patrol meeting, on an afternoon after school, lasting one hour, usually at the home of the PL. During the summers, our meetings were every other week, and then it was to go swimming. We would pile into the bus and travel to Audubon Park and swim in the two pools there (gone now).
Camping trips were failry the same as now. We would meet and leave for six and come back on Sunday. As the bus would come down Causeway Blvd, Mr. Nardelle would stop every so often to let scouts off close to their homes, so by the time we got to Ella Dolhonde, less than half were left on board..
We got around in buses. As of 2007, we've owned three buses and four trailers. Because of the size of the troop and insurance, it is impractical to own a bus today.
In the early 70's, the troop moved it's meeting location to the Elks Lodge on Cleary Ave where it remained until 1985 when it moved to Saint Angela Merici School, where we now meet and where the troop is chartered,
